Manteca is a city in the Central Valley of California, found 76 miles (122 kilometers) east of San Francisco. It was established in 1861 by Joshua Cowell. Cowell guaranteed around 1,000 sections of land and constructed houses on what is currently the edge of Principal and Yosemite, where Bank of America presently stands. In 1873, the Central Pacific Railroad laid track straightforwardly through the area. The inhabitants needed to allude to their new train station as "Cowell Station", yet there was at that point a Cowell Station close to Tracy. The inhabitants consented to change the name of the local area, picking "Monteca" as the new name. This was misprinted as "Manteca" (Spanish for fat or margarine) by the railroad, and the incorrectly spelled adaptation was at last acknowledged as the name of the town. In 1918, Manteca was consolidated as a city, and Joshua Cowell turned into its most memorable chairman.
