Upon his passing in 2001, Mr. Stokes was memorialized by Mike Thompson in a legislative recognition:
"John Stokes experienced childhood in Southern California and accepted his undergrad schooling at Santa Barbara State College. In 1942 he was dispatched a Second Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps and was prepared to fly the Martin B-26 Marauder. Positioned in England, he flew numerous missions over France. His 29th mission was the D-Day bombarding of the Normandy Coast. After the freedom of Paris, Group Commander Stokes, situated in France, made his keep going battle trip on March 13, 1945. He presented with fearlessness and differentiation and was granted the Distinguished Flying Cross with ten Oak Leaf Clusters. All through his life, he kept in contact with overcomers of the 344th Bomb Group with whom he had shared the risks of war. He returned frequently to France to visit with French friends.
